What is Crimestoppers?
Crimestoppers is a program which involves the public, media and the Des Plaines, Illinois Police Department in their fight against crime.
It offers anonymity and cash rewards to people who furnish information that leads to an arrest, the recovery of stolen property or illegal drugs, or the solving or prevention of a crime.
Keeping callers anonymous helps ease the fear of involvement, and cash rewards counter apathy.
Crimestoppers is a non-profit organization totally funded by contributions from concerned citizens, local businesses and civic groups. Contributions are tax deductible.
Who administers the program?
The Crimestoppers Board of Directors is compromised of concerned citizens and civic leaders in the City of Des Plaines, Illinois, who oversee the operation of the program. The group is sponsored by the Des Plaines Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and has the support of the Des Plaines Police Department and the Office of the Mayor.
How does it work?
Des Plaines Crimestoppers is a non-profit corporation whose Board of Directors is responsible for establishing policy, raising funds, and setting the amount of each reward. The Board works closely with the Des Plaines Police Department through a police officer assigned as Crimestopper Coordinator.
A secret code is assigned upon receipt of a tip. All tips are anonymous. No caller ID is used on the phone line and the website does not record IP Addresses. Tipsters remain anonymous, and there is no pressure to reveal their identity, even when collecting the rewards. Crimestoppers is interested in information, not caller identification information.
If the tipster’s information results in an arrest, filling of criminal charges or the recovery of stolen property or illegal drugs, a reward will be made available for the tipster. The tipster uses their secret code to receive a cash reward.
The Board of Directors oversees the program and approves the rewards to be paid, based on information presented by the Police Coordinator.
Scholastic Program
Des Plaines Crimestoppers funds and supports a scholastic Crimestoppers program at both Maine West and Maine East High Schools. Under staff supervision, and a special board comprised of Student Council members determines reward amounts for those providing information on acts of vandalism, drugs, theft, etc. and recovery of stolen property.
